Our staff provides free “Know Your Rights Presentations” to organizations such as churches, schools, libraries, and other community agencies. Participants learn the basics of how the U.S. immigration system works, and of different types of legal processes for which they, their families, or neighbors may qualify. Basic legal rights everyone has in the United States, and practical information to avoid fraud or other legal problems are also presented.

After Ezequiel became a U.S. citizen, he brought his family from Mexico to live with him. They bought their dream home, but when Patricia decided to apply for citizenship, she had to return to Mexico for 10 years to serve penalities for coming to the U.S unlawfully 20 years prior. Through the work of Catholic Charities, Patricia’s penalty was reduced to 3 1/2 years and she is now a permanent resident.
Luis’ mom escaped political persecution in Venezuela after being forced to participate in pre-regime activities. She was an engineer for a government petroleum agency, her husband had left, and she was five months pregnant. She sought asylum in the United States, where several months later, Luis was born.
