Marian House Needs Turkeys

November 15th, 2011       |

For the fourth year in a row, Marian House has designated the Friday, Saturday, and Monday before Thanksgiving as “Bring a Turkey to Work Day” for the Marian House.  So far this holiday season, donations of turkeys are significantly down.

Each year, Marian House Community Outreach not only delivers turkey baskets to families in our area who would not otherwise be able to enjoy a traditional Thanksgiving meal, but also delivers turkeys to area food pantries, churches, and other organizations whose clients need them.

This year, Community Outreach had planned to deliver more than 150 meal baskets, each containing a turkey, to families in our community who cannot come to the Marian House for services.  Additionally, they have planned to deliver 175 turkeys to area food pantries and churches.  Currently, the program has only received very few turkeys, so many families who were counting on receiving a turkey for Thanksgiving, will not receive one.  They are also in need of all the trimmings for the baskets:  boxed stuffing mix, instant mashed potatoes, canned vegetables and fruit, cranberry sauce, pumpkin pies, canned yams, and marshmallows.

Our Life Support Services usually distributes about a dozen turkeys, but this year, none are available for those clients.  And, the soup kitchen uses the donated turkeys throughout the year to supplement monthly donations of food for the daily meal preparation.  In total, we are hoping the community will donate 600 turkeys.

We are asking for your help.  If you can afford to purchase a turkey and donate it to the Marian House, it would be greatly appreciated.  Most area grocery stores in our community are offering turkeys for $7 and up.  Turkeys can be dropped off at the Marian House, 14 West Bijou, at the west side of the building at the dock, Monday – Sat., 8am – 2pm.

Thank you for your support!
